HOPE MINISTRIES

tangible hope in a hurting world

Hope Ministries was established in September 2016, after members of Mt. Hope became aware that the WAWM School District identifies between 150 and 200 homeless children each year. School district social workers & counselors as well as a small committee of Mt. Hope members then collaborated to create a clothing and food resource for these students.

The mission of the Hope Ministries is to show God’s love through our actions by providing new clothing and food for students and their families who are in transitional living situations in our community. We are a relational ministry. We are not here to simply assist with physical needs; rather, we seek to connect with our clients, offering hope and encouragement. We conduct our ministry without judgment and with open hearts. We believe that all of God's children are entitled to basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

Since the Hope Ministries was established, it has grown tremendously. We have added many other resources, including hygiene products, diapers and wipes, school supplies, and Christmas gifts for children. As of fall, 2023, we serve approximately 130 families, including about 550 people.

LATEST NEWS

We are pleased to announce that the Hope Ministries is the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Otto Bremer Trust! The Otto Bremer Trust is a private charitable trust based in St. Paul, MN. Created in 1944 by business and community leader Otto Bremer, it is committed to supporting a better quality of life for residents of Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Since its founding, OBT has invested more than $1 billion in people, places, and opportuni- ties in its region. We are extremely excited to join the many recipients of this impactful grant.

What will the money be used for?

We are currently planning to set up a new hygiene room for our families. In the past, we have given out hygiene items sporadically. We will purchase large metal racks and plastic bins, as well as stocking up on hygiene items for distribution. Imagine not having the things you need to stay clean! We know that this will create relief and dignity for our families who often do not have the financial means to purchase such items.

In addition, we will purchase new winter coats at discount prices. In past years, we have given out over 300 new winter coats for men, women, and children. However, the need has grown tremendously. Last winter we distributed 579 new winter coats! Having the funds up front will help us to purchase coats at the best price possible when they are available.

Does this mean that Hope Ministries doesn’t need donations for awhile?

NO!! Why?

  • We have an annual budget of about $60,000. We receive $1,000 from the Mount Hope budget. That leaves about $59,000 which is raised through donations, fundraisers, and small gifts from community organizations.

  • Prices have gone up. Everything costs more. Our alternate food sources (Feeding America and Just One More) have been dealing with this, too. As a result, our weekly donations from them have greatly diminished.

  • For two years we received $10,000 from the Mt. Olive ACTS grant. When this money was no longer available and the grant program was dissolved, we definitely felt that loss.

So – We celebrate AND we ask for your continued support. This ministry continues to be blessed, and for many of our community members, it is a true lifeline. Praise God!
