HOPE CLOSET

…all of God's children are entitled to basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter.

WHAT WE DO

The Hope Closet is a unique partnership between the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District and Mount Hope Lutheran Church. The Hope Closet provides new clothing to homeless families or families in transition in the West Allis/West Milwaukee School District.

WHO WE SERVE

Every year, over 200 students in the WAWM School District are identified as homeless, or “in transition.” Social workers and counselors from each school refer students and their families to the Hope Closet. Families are then invited to come to the Hope Closet to choose new clothing for each family member using a point system.

HOW IT WORKS

We use a points system based on family size. The closet was set up as a Choice Model which allows clients to shop within their point allotment for items they need. We use a Choice Model because it upholds client dignity, meets client health needs, allows them to feel like they’re shopping and limits waste as clients only take pieces they will need. To receive services from the Hope Ministries, you must be referred by a WAWM school employee or by another church or organization that is connected to the Hope Ministries. Families are accepted if they are in transition, without a permanent address. Currently, visits are by appointment only.

WHERE CLOTHES & FUNDING COME FROM

The Hope Closet is partially funded by the Mt. Hope Budget; the difference is made up through donations from private donors and community organizations.

Since the Hope Closet opened in September 2016, it has expanded to provide other needs such as school supplies, toiletries and cleaning supplies, Christmas toys, and diapers and other items for infants.
