BAPTISM

WHAT IS IT?

Baptism is a significant part of our faith journey. Our baptism sets us out on a lifelong journey that is characterized by our relationship to God, our relationship to our faith community, our relationships in our community and the wider world. Living our baptismal covenant means living a life of growth in the faith practices of discipleship.

When the person to be baptized is an infant, the promise God makes in baptism is carried through parents, sponsors, and Christ’s church to shape a lifelong response to God’s love. Therefore, in regards to the child, parents and the sponsors are asked if they will “…live with them among God’s faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the holy Scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that the child may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace.

When parents carry out these promises, you help to lead your child into a personal living relationship with Jesus.

The entire congregation “sponsors” your child in baptism. You may also select relatives or friends as additional sponsors you would have join you in making these promises.

Since baptism brings one into the community of faith, you can schedule the baptism at an available worship service at Mt. Hope.

having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
— Colossians 2:12
